Scam Alert

Area residents are being victimized by a scam. An individual calls people claiming to be a relative in jail and they need money to get out of jail. They are told to meet an individual and pay money to get the person out of jail. There is also another scam that targets individuals already in jail. The caller claims to be a bondsman and if the victim will meet the caller at a restaurant in Murfreesboro and pay $900 the relative will be released from jail. Sheriff Steve Graves says that the fake bondsman has family information on inmates, which makes them sound legitimate. Sheriff Graves says that the same scam has been in operation in Wilson and Lincoln Counties.

After One Year Mother Remains Missing

Tuesday marked one year since the disappearance of a Shelbyville mother and teacher.
Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said that although a year has passed, they are still no closer to locating Shelley Mook.
Mook disappeared February 28 after she dropped off her 6-year-old daughter at her ex-husband’s home. Her burned out car was found in Murfreesboro that same night, where she had recently moved.
Police canvassed the area and search the home of Mook’s ex-husband, but all to no avail.
Mook was presumed dead– but investigators say they need to find her body before they can charge anyone.
The reward for information in her case now totals $20,000.

Motorcyclists To Continue To Wear Helmets In Tennessee

Motorcyclists will have to wait another year to renew their efforts to do away with Tennessee’s helmet law.
Republican Representative Judd Matheny of Tullahoma on Tuesday told the House Transportation Subcommittee that he’s withdrawing his bill seeking to end helmet requirements for adult riders. Supporters question the safety benefits of helmets and argued that ending the law would boost motorcycle tourism to Tennessee. But a legislative analysis of the measure projects that changing the law would lead to an increase in traumatic brain injuries, carrying a $1.1 million price tag for TennCare. The state’s expanded Medicaid system spent $3.1 million to treat motorcycle accidents in the most recent budget year, including $1.8 million on brain injuries.
